{"id":1090,"date":"2020-06-12T08:38:55","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T15:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/wordpress\/?p=1090"},"modified":"2025-08-01T11:29:26","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T18:29:26","slug":"350000-gift-to-ucsd-to-create-covid-19-epidemiological-tracking-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/?p=1090","title":{"rendered":"$350,000 Gift to UCSD to Create COVID-19 Epidemiological Tracking Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/tech\/2020\/06\/04\/350000-gift-to-ucsd-to-create-covid-19-epidemiological-tracking-study\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">UC San Diego announced Thursday a $350,000 donation from Jean and Gary Shekhter, which will help fund San Diego Epidemiology and Research for COVID-19 Health, a collaborative research study aimed at helping local businesses and employees return to work safely by screening community members for presence of the coronavirus.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">The research study is co-led by <a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"https:\/\/health.ucsd.edu\/Pages\/default.aspx\">UC San Diego<\/a>, <a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/\">Scripps Research<\/a>and <a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rchsd.org\/\">Rady Children\u2019s Hospital-San Diego<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u201cNearly 300,000 San Diego County residents have lost jobs because of COVID-19,\u201d said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. \u201cOur economy is struggling, so the sooner people can get back to their jobs, the better for our region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">UC San Diego launched a similar testing program on campus in March called Return to Learn. The evidence-based program aims to make monthly COVID- 19 testing available to students to track the novel coronavirus and better position the university to resume in-person activities in fall 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u201cBased on my understanding about COVID-19, the most efficient way of opening the economy is to screen more people,\u201d said Gary Shekhter. \u201cScreening gives us an understanding of what\u2019s going on in the community such as seeing a particular situation in an area ignite, then isolating and dealing with the contact area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Other research partners include the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Biocom. At UC San Diego, SEARCH is led by researchers Gene Yeo, Rob Knight and Louise Laurent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u201cI hope our gift will inspire others. We want to encourage the community to get involved in the COVID-19 crisis,\u201d Jean Shekhter said. \u201cBecause of UC San Diego, our region has developed a tremendous base for life sciences.
