{"id":1672,"date":"2025-08-05T08:31:34","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T15:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/?p=1672"},"modified":"2025-08-05T08:32:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T15:32:04","slug":"rob-knight-named-2025-scientist-of-the-year-by-arcs-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/?p=1672","title":{"rendered":"Rob Knight Named 2025 Scientist of the Year by ARCS San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.ucsd.edu\/story\/rob-knight-named-2025-scientist-of-the-year-by-arcs-san-diego\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; text-decoration: underline;\">An international leader in the scientific study of microbes, Rob Knight, Ph.D., has been named the 2025 Scientist of the Year by the Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Foundation San Diego chapter.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Knight is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Bioengineering, and Computer Science and Engineering at University of California San Diego, as well as the Wolfe Family Endowed Chair in Microbiome Research at Rady Children\u2019s Hospital-San Diego. He is also the director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation, and a founding faculty member and professor in the Hal\u0131c\u0131o\u011flu Data Science Institute. Knight will be honored on April 13 at a <a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"https:\/\/san-diego.arcsfoundation.org\/currentevents\">special event hosted by the ARCS Foundation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1426\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 705px\"><a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/rob-knight-705x450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1426\" src=\"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/rob-knight-705x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"705\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/rob-knight-705x450.jpg 705w, https:\/\/knightlab.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/rob-knight-705x450-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Rob Knight, was named Scientist of the Year by the ARCS Foundation.<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Known as a pioneer in the study of the roles that microbes play in human health and disease and the functioning of ecosystems, his work has linked microbes to a range of health conditions including obesity and inflammatory bowel disease, has enhanced our understanding of microbes in environments ranging from the oceans to the tundra, and made high-throughput sequencing techniques accessible to thousands of researchers around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&#8220;The impact of microbes on human and environmental health is profound, and the San Diego chapter of ARCS is both honored and thrilled to have one of the world&#8217;s leading microbiome researchers, Dr. Rob Knight, as our 2025\u00a0Scientist of the Year,\u201d said Leslie Bruce, president of the ARCS Foundation San Diego Chapter. \u201cNot only has Dr. Knight contributed more than 900 scientific articles in the field, his lab has produced many vital software tools and laboratory techniques that enable the work of other researchers as well. Growing evidence suggests gut microbes also influence the brain, potentially affecting mood, behavior and psychiatric illnesses. By better understanding the microbial world Dr. Knight&#8217;s work helps improve both human physical and mental health.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&#8220;Rob&#8217;s groundbreaking work at the intersection of microbiology, data science and health has transformed our understanding of the invisible world that profoundly influences both human well-being and the health of all,&#8221; said Gabriel G. Haddad, M.D., Distinguished Professor, vice dean for children\u2019s academic programs and chair for the Department of Pediatrics. &#8220;His contributions to UC San Diego, the scientific community and global health are immeasurable, inspiring future generations of researchers to continue exploring the vast potential of the microbiome for better health outcomes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Recipient of numerous local and national awards including the 2019 National Institutes of Health Pioneer Award, Knight has also authored two books, \u201cFollow Your Gut: The Enormous Impact of Tiny Microbes\u201d (Simon &amp; Schuster, 2015) and coauthor of \u201cDirt is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child\u2019s Developing Immune System (St. Martin\u2019s Press, 2017).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u201cIt is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the ARCS Foundation as the 2025 Scientist of the Year,\u201d said Knight. \u201cThis recognition is not only a reflection of my work but also a testament to the collaborative spirit of my exceptional colleagues and the remarkable opportunities provided by UC San Diego and the wider scientific community. Together, we continue to push the boundaries of what we know about microbes and their crucial role in shaping life on Earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Since its inception in 1985, the ARCS Foundation has been a philanthropic organization led by women with the goal of supporting scientific advancement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) by providing unrestricted funding to help the country\u2019s brightest graduate scholars.
